Pdf Summary
Dr. Abdallah Elshafeey from The Johns Hopkins Hospital conducted a survey on the adoption of smart technology among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) through a large Facebook group with 20,000 members. Participants were self-reported AF patients aged 18 or older, with survey deployment facilitated via RedCap.

The survey's demographic results showed that the majority of respondents were over 56 years old (79.5%), female (82.5%), White (93.3%), and non-Hispanic (96.2%). Most lived in urban areas (69.6%), with a considerable portion unemployed (60.8%). Regarding income, nearly half earned below $100,000 annually (49.8%). A significant proportion had professional degrees (69.7%). Insurance coverage was split between Medicare (46.5%) and private insurance (40.6%).

The study found a prevalent ownership of smart devices among AF patients on social media for managing their condition. Patients exhibited overwhelmingly positive attitudes towards using technology in managing AF, indicating a supportive environment for integrating smart health technologies into patient care.

However, the study highlighted the need for future research to include a wider demographic range, particularly from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, to better understand and expand the usage of smart technology across diverse populations with AF.

No conflicts of interest were disclosed in this research study.
