A Novel Remote Monitoring Solution for Leadless Pacemakers
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The study detailed in the document is focused on developing a remote monitoring solution for leadless pacemakers, specifically the AVEIR single-chamber (VR) and dual-chamber (DR) systems created by Abbott. Traditionally, remote monitoring has not been available for dual-chamber leadless pacemakers. The AVEIR systems utilize a novel conductive telemetry communication technology for in-clinic interrogations. The proposed remote monitoring solution involves a patient transmitter that can wirelessly interrogate the pacemaker, gathering data to be transmitted to the Merlin.net Patient Care Network.

In the study, US patients with implanted AVEIR DR systems were selected for participation through an IRB-approved process. The study involved using the patient transmitter in both hand-held and wired modes to interrogate the leadless pacemaker system and using a programmer to verify that the transmitter did not alter device parameters. The patient transmitters were designed for quick interrogation and local storage of data.

The results showed that all 19 participating patients from two centers, consisting of 37% females, successfully completed the interrogation using the patient transmitter. The interrogation of different pacing modes, which included DDD, AAI, and VVI, was successful each time. The interrogation times ranged from 2 to 31 seconds per device, with most instances achieving maximum telemetry throughput and speed. Additionally, subsequent programmer interrogation confirmed that the leadless pacemaker settings remained unchanged after using the patient transmitter.

The study concludes that using a remote transmitter with AVEIR DR patients is feasible and provides an effective remote monitoring solution for patients with leadless pacemakers through the use of conductive telemetry technology.
